Purpose: “NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) hereby solicits proposals from accredited U.S. universities for innovative, early-stage space technology research of high priority to NASA’s Mission Directorates.  This Appendix seeks proposals on specific space technologies that are currently at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL). Investment in innovative low-TRL research increases knowledge and capabilities in response to new questions and requirements, stimulates innovation, and allows more creative solutions to problems constrained by schedule and budget. Moreover, it is investment in fundamental research activities that has historically benefited the Nation on a broader basis, generating new industries and spin-off applications.”  The current five topics are: 1) – Development of Fusion Plasma Direct Energy Conversion Processes for Thrust and Electric Power Production, 2) Development of Deterministic High Bandwidth Onboard Wireless Networks, 3) Improved Methods for Characterization of Blunt-Body Dynamic Stability, 4) Advancing Manufacturing Approaches for Scalable Functionally Graded Materials for Space Applications, and 5) Development of Materials and Manufacturing Processes for High Temperature Radiators.

Purpose: “The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is issuing, on behalf of the Vehicle Technologies Office, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). Projects awarded under this FOA will be funded, in whole or in part, with funds appropriated by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Public Law 117-58, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).  The BIL is a once-in-a-generation investment in infrastructure that will grow a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable economy through enhancing U.S. competitiveness in the world, creating good jobs, ensuring stronger access to these economic benefits for disadvantaged communities. The BIL appropriates more than $62 billion to DOE to deliver a more equitable clean energy future for the American people.  The BIL will invest more than $7 billion in the batteries supply chain over the five year period encompassing fiscal years (FYs) 2022 through 2026. This includes sustainable sourcing and processing of the critical minerals used in battery production without new extraction or mining all the way through end-of-life battery collection and recycling. This FOA and any related activities support BIL section 40208. The sections are focused on Electric Drive Vehicle Battery Recycling and Second-Life Program that includes second-life applications for electric drive vehicle batteries that have been used to power electric drive vehicles; and technologies and processes for final recycling and disposal of the electric drive vehicle batteries.”

Purpose: “The National Science Foundation (NSF) Convergence Accelerator program addresses national-scale societal challenges through use-inspired convergence research. Using a convergence approach and innovation processes like human-centered design, user discovery, and team science and integration of multidisciplinary research, the Convergence Accelerator program seeks to transition basic research and discovery into practice — to solve high-impact societal challenges aligned with specific research themes (tracks).  The NSF Convergence Accelerator Phases 1 and 2 for the 2022 Cohort - Tracks H, I, J solicitation consists of three tracks as follows: Track H: Enhancing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities; Track I: Sustainable Materials for Global Challenges; and Track J: Food & Nutrition Security.”

Application Deadline: ***Limited*** Because WSU may only submit two proposals (one medical and one science & engineering), Limited Submission Concept Papers must be sent to proposals@wichita.edu by May 31, 2022 at 12 noon, in case an internal competition is needed.  WSU may choose up to four medical and four science & engineering Concept Papers to submit to Keck for consultation. You will be informed if your Concept Paper has been chosen to be reviewed by Keck consultants by June 15, 2022, and you will have a chance to finalize your Concept Papers for Keck consultation review (if selected) by June 30, 2022.  Please email proposals@wichita.edu for a list of requirements for the internal WSU Limited Submission Concept Papers.

Purpose: “The Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting projects in two specific areas: 1) medical research and 2) science and engineering, that are distinctive and novel in their approach, question the prevailing paradigm, or have the potential to break open new territory in their field. Past grants have been awarded to major universities, independent research institutions, and medical schools to support pioneering biological and physical science research and engineering, including the development of promising new technologies, instrumentation or methodologies.”

Funding Agency: Fulbright Scholar Program

Title:

Application Deadline: June 1, 2022

Purpose: “The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is a unique Fulbright Scholar Program initiative that is specifically driven by the goals of U.S. institutions of higher education to enhance internationalization efforts on their campuses. Through the S-I-R Program, institutions host a scholar from outside of the United States for a semester or full academic year to teach courses, assist in curriculum development, guest lecture, develop study abroad/exchange partnerships and engage with the campus and the local community.” 

Amount: Fulbright grant benefits are provided directly to the individual Scholar, disbursed by IIE and include round-trip international air travel, a monthly stipend, a monthly allowance for up to two dependents, and initial settling-in and professional allowances. IIE will issue the DS2019 form in support of J-visa sponsorship.

Purpose: “The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), have teamed up to provide a fellowship opportunity that will enable clinicians from India and the United States of America (USA) to conduct research in areas of infectious diseases and immunology at an exchange laboratory and other approved facilities.  This fellowship is available to clinicians from the USA interested in a hands-on research experience at a Government of India accredited facility in India.”

Amount: Support in the form of a stipend for living ($3,000 per month up to 3 months), and other expenses as determined by the program sponsors, health insurance supplemental stipend and roundtrip airfare.

Purpose: “This Targeted PCORI Funding Announcement (Targeted PFA) seeks to fund large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and/or well-designed observational studies comparing multicomponent strategies to improve early detection of, and timely care for, complications up to six weeks postpartum for groups more often underserved or experiencing the greatest disparities in health outcomes, including Black, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN), Hispanic, rural, and low socioeconomic status (SES) populations.”

Amount: Up to $5 million for smaller studies; up to $15 million for larger studies, over five years

For the 2022 Methods PFA, PCORI has identified the following areas as programmatic priorities: 1) Methods to Improve the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Clinical Research; 2) Methods to Improve Study Design; 3) Methods to Support Data Research Networks; 4) Methods Related to Ethical and Human Subjects Protections Issues in PCOR/CER.”

Purpose: “The goal of the NIDCR Career Enhancement Award (K18) is to support mentored research experiences for established investigators who either wish to expand or augment their dental, oral, or craniofacial (DOC) research program, or to redirect their research by incorporating DOC research into their research program to advance fundamental knowledge about dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease.”

Amount: NIH will contribute $25,000 per year toward the research development costs of the award recipient, which must be justified and consistent with the stage of development of the candidate and the proportion of time to be spent in research or career development activities.

Purpose: “The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support studies that will identify, develop, and/or test strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies. Studies that promote equitable dissemination and implementation of evidence-based interventions among underrepresented communities are encouraged. Conversely, there is a benefit in understanding circumstances that create a need to stop or reduce (“de-implement”) the use of practices that are ineffective, unproven, low-value, or harmful. In addition, studies to advance dissemination and implementation research methods and measures are encouraged. Applications that focus on re-implementation of evidence-based health services (e.g. cancer screening) that may have dropped off amidst the ongoing COVID pandemic are encouraged.”

Amount: The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed $275,000. No more than $200,000 may be requested in a single year. The maximum project period is two years.

Purpose: “The PRARP was initiated in FY11 to address the long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) as they pertain to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD). The PRARP prioritizes research that will provide meaningful outcomes to support caregivers and persons with AD and ADRD, with a focus on partnership with those most impacted by these conditions. In addition, the PRARP strongly advocates for study population diversity, including but not limited to ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and health access factors. In addition to a focus on individual and care support, the PRARP seeks to support research focusing on the intersection of TBI-AD/ADRD, including understanding mechanisms, biomarkers, and risk factors associated with Veteran populations. The PRARP is interested in supporting research leading to treatment modalities that have near-term benefit.”

Purpose: “The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) invites eligible entities to submit competitive grant applications for the ORR Employer Engagement Program. Through the Employer Engagement Program, ORR will provide funding to strengthen employer engagement in the integration and self-sufficiency of eligible Afghan entrants within the community. Programs will enter into formal partnerships with employers to develop training curricula, provide career counseling, and strengthen opportunities for workplace-based training, apprenticeships, and internships. Programs will share costs of workplace instructors and will supply liaisons to design work-oriented language and training curricula, schedule and announce services, and coordinate with employment case managers for referral and enrollment to support career advancement. Employer partnerships will also include longer-term individual investment opportunities by sponsoring and covering the costs of vocational certification, recertification, and/or longer-term educational degrees.”

Purpose: “The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy (STP) Program is designed to provide opportunities to participate in programs, projects, and activities within the Loan Programs Office (LPO). The STP Program provides an opportunity for highly talented engineers; sustainability, legal, finance professionals, entrepreneurs; and physical, natural, and social scientists to participate in projects at DOE's Loan Programs Office (LPO) in Washington, DC.  The LPO seeks to develop future leaders in advanced energy technology and energy project finance. Participants selected for this opportunity will be involved in projects in the Technical and Project Management Division (TMPD) within LPO.”

Amount: Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by LPO. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. LPO may authorize a stipend increase to offset the costs of health insurance. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance plans offered through ORISE.  A relocation allowance may be provided for participants relocating to the Washington, D.C.  Participants may receive reimbursement for training and/or travel as approved by LPO.

ONR's Young Investigator Program seeks to identify and support academic scientists and engineers who are in their first or second full-time tenure-track or tenure-track-equivalent academic appointment, who have received their PhD or equivalent degree on or after 01 January 2015, and who show exceptional promise for doing creative research. The objectives of this program are to attract outstanding faculty members of Institutions of Higher Education (hereafter also called "universities") to the Department of the Navy's Science and Technology (S&T) research program, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers. Proposals addressing research areas that are of interest to ONR Program Officers will be considered. NPP Fellows are selected through a competitive peer review process, and complete one- to three-year appointments that advance research across NASA’s space and Earth science missions. The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) consists of two components—the NASA Postdoctoral Research Program and the NASA Postdoctoral Management Program. As the NPP is a resident program, Fellows are located at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute during the appointment.”

Amount: Stipend rates for these NASA postdoctoral fellows currently start at $63,000 per year. Supplements are provided for higher cost-of-living areas and certain academic specialties.  The stipend amount for a senior postdoctoral fellow is based on the location of the appointment, experience (number of years beyond the doctoral degree) and career achievement, including academic rank and professional title. Available benefits include health insurance supplements, professional development resources, a research allowance up to $10,000 per year and relocation reimbursement.

Purpose: “The Eppley Foundation for Research was incorporated in 1947 for the purpose of “increasing knowledge in pure or applied science…in chemistry, physics and biology through study, research and publication.”   The Foundation does not support work in the social sciences, education or computer science, and only rarely funds research into diseases that have considerable financial support available, such as AIDS, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Particular areas of interest include innovative medical investigations, climate change, whole ecosystem studies, as well as research on single species if they are of particular significance in their environments, in the U.S. and abroad.” 

Amount: The Eppley Foundation for Research is a small, family foundation that disburses up to $460,000 a year.

Each roundtable will allow stakeholders to engage and discuss their experiences with implementing the definition of "waters of the United States," including challenges and opportunities within their geographic areas. The roundtables will also provide an opportunity for the participants to discuss geographic similarities and differences, particular water resources that are characteristic of or unique to each region, and regionally specific feedback about implementation.  On February 24, 2022, the agencies announced the selection of ten roundtables that highlight geographic differences and a range of perspectives—including agriculture, conservation groups, developers, drinking water and wastewater managers, environmental organizations, communities with environmental justice concerns, industry, Tribal nations, and state and local governments.
